“When the dust settles”

Jesus replied…. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.  (John 16:31; NIV)

Jesus speaking to his followers made a statement that left them puzzled when he stated that there was coming a time when His followers would be scattered.  I pondered that statement for a while and thought to myself if the church was no more, the lights faded and it was just me and my faith where would I find myself? When the dust settles where would you find ourselves? This is a very real thought process that we all must answer at some point in our lives. We live in a day when faith much like everything in our society has become consumer driven. We shop for the right church fit, we critique the messengers, the style, the atmosphere and the church product. This should not be the case; we should not judge the church like we do a local restaurant or hotel. Are we truly focusing clearly on Christ? Would our faith with stand?

I like Jesus statement when he stated “you will scatter. And leave me alone” but “ I am not alone, for the Father is with me.” Jesus understood that no matter what the situation you may find yourself in that the only things that truly matters is that God is on your side and that your faith is in Him. That our hearts are obedient to His will and not our own will and desires. When the dust settles, it comes down to where we stand in obedience to Him.  Have we accepted Gods plan to save His creation? Have we accepted that Jesus is the Son of God and salvation is found only in Him? Have we confessed our selfish state and our sins? If so we can “take heart” as Jesus said in the following verse of our text, because when the dust settled, Jesus overcame the world and so can we. This and only this can bring us through life’s troubles. In this world we will all go through troubles and heart aches but God can meet us where we are and guide us to a place of peace.
